Why you shouldn’t employ anyone now

Before you rush to employ someone in your business, take 2 minutes to answer the following yes/no questions:

  1. Are you looking for a very specific skillset?
  2. Do you need these skills urgently?
  3. Do you want to reduce staff costs and expenses?
  4. Are you dealing with projects/issues that may not be ongoing or may need re-evaluation should the environment change?
  5. Is the role highly deadline driven?
  6. Do you need someone that can “hit the ground running”, and won’t require training?
  7. Can the role be done remotely?
  8. Do you want someone that has a recent rating/reference regarding the specific skill you are looking for?
  9. Do you want to reduce your legal liability within the workforce space?
  10. Will you need to shrink/expand your team at short notice?
  11. Do you require someone that can operate under minimal supervision?
  12. Do you require someone with knowledge of diverse cultures, operations, structures and strategy?
  13. Are you operating in a business environment that is constantly changing/transforming?
  14. Is the work you want completed of a specific duration?
  15. Do you believe the skillset you are looking for is currently scarce in the local market?
  16. Are you considering a more flexible workforce planning strategy?

If you answered “Yes” to most of these questions, then you shouldn’t be looking to employ someone.

You should be looking for a contingent/freelance resource. It’s not difficult to source and engage these resources, but most businesses are unsure of where to start and how to incorporate these skills. Organisations will need to move quickly though – the ability to create and implement a blended/agile workforce strategy will soon become a key business competency within the current environment of uncertainty and change.
